Description

Florida Shrimp Pie is a flavorful Southern American seafood quiche that combines tender shrimp, sharp cheddar, and savory spices baked in a flaky pie crust. This rich and creamy main course is perfect for a comforting dinner, featuring a blend of sautéed vegetables, aromatic Old Bay seasoning, and cheeses that enhance the coastal flavors of Florida.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Base

  • 1 prepared 9-inch pie crust
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Shrimp Mixture

  • 1 pound medium shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Prepare pie crust: Fit the prepared 9-inch pie crust into a pie dish and crimp the edges for a decorative finish.
  3. Sauté vegetables and shrimp: In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sauté onion and green bell pepper for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Stir in chopped shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes until pink, then remove from heat.
  4. Mix filling: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Old Bay seasoning, paprika, salt, and black pepper until smooth. Stir in shredded cheddar, grated Parmesan, chopped parsley, and the cooked shrimp mixture until thoroughly combined.
  5. Assemble pie: Pour the filling evenly into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out smoothly.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is lightly golden brown.
  7. Rest and serve: Allow the pie to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving to set the filling properly and enhance flavors.

Notes

  • For enhanced Florida flavor, add 1/4 cup chopped pimentos or some diced fresh tomato to the filling.
  • This pie pairs wonderfully with a light citrus salad for a balanced meal.
  • You can substitute crab meat for part of the shrimp if desired for a variation in seafood taste.
