Description

This Ultimate Skillet Lasagna is a hearty one-pan meal that combines ground beef, Italian sausage, and lasagna noodles cooked together in a skillet with marinara sauce and topped with creamy ricotta and melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. It offers all the comforting flavors of traditional baked lasagna but with less fuss and quicker cooking time, making it perfect for a family dinner on any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage casings removed
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Seasonings and Sauces

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 3 cups marinara sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth

Pasta and Cheese

  • 8 lasagna noodles, broken into large pieces
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Brown the Meat: Heat olive oil in a large deep skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage and cook until browned, breaking the meat apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease if needed.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, oregano, and red pepper flakes if using, cooking for about one minute to release their flavors.
  3. Add Sauces and Broth: Pour in the marinara sauce and beef broth and stir to combine all ingredients evenly in the skillet.
  4. Cook the Pasta: Add the broken lasagna noodles into the liquid and gently press them down so they are submerged. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cover and cook for 15 to 18 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the noodles are tender and cooked through.
  5. Add Cheeses and Melt: Dollop the ricotta cheese over the pasta mixture and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheeses evenly on top. Cover again and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving hot.

Notes

  • This skillet lasagna delivers the classic taste of baked lasagna but with less cleanup and faster cooking time.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, let the skillet sit uncovered for a few minutes before serving to allow excess liquid to evaporate and the sauce to thicken.
  • You can omit the red pepper flakes if you prefer a milder flavor.
  • For a lower-fat version, substitute lean ground meat and reduce the cheese quantities.
