Description

Classic American Sloppy Joes are a hearty and flavorful ground beef sandwich with a tangy tomato-based sauce, perfect for a quick and satisfying family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Serving

  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Sauté vegetables: Add the finely chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Add sauce ingredients: Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  4. Simmer the mixture: Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld.
  5. Assemble and serve: Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately for a warm, comforting meal.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a dash of hot sauce or smoked paprika to the sauce.
  • This recipe also works well with ground turkey or plant-based meat substitutes.
  • Leftover sloppy joe filling can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months for convenient future meals.
