Description

This Restaurant-Style Bread Dipping Oil is a flavorful and aromatic blend of herbs, spices, and olive oil, perfect for serving as an appetizer or accompaniment to crusty bread. It features a robust mix of garlic, oregano, basil, parsley, and other seasonings that create a rich Mediterranean-inspired dipping experience that can be prepared quickly and stored for convenience.

Ingredients

Scale

Herb and Spice Mix

  • 1 tablespoon (2-3 large cloves) minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Dipping Oil

  • Extra virgin olive oil (about 1/2 cup per serving)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Herb and Spice Mix: In a small bowl, combine all the dried herbs and spices including dried oregano, basil, parsley, onion powder, black pepper, red pepper flakes, kosher salt, dried thyme, dried rosemary, and garlic powder together. Add the minced garlic cloves to the mix and stir well to evenly distribute all the flavors.
  2. Prepare the Dipping Oil: When ready to serve, mix 1 tablespoon of the prepared herb and spice mix with about 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil. Stir well to incorporate the flavors into the olive oil. Optionally, add grated Parmesan cheese for added richness and umami.
  3. Storage: Store any leftover prepared herb and spice mix in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. For longer storage, it’s best to omit the fresh minced garlic and keep the dry herb and spice blend in your pantry where it can last up to six months.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to control the heat level of the dipping oil.
  • Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor.
  • Adding freshly grated Parmesan cheese just before serving adds a nice savory touch, but is optional.
  • For best freshness, prepare the oil mixture just before serving rather than storing pre-mixed.
  • This dipping oil pairs wonderfully with crusty Italian bread, focaccia, or baguette slices.
