Description

Indulge in the decadent flavors of crème brûlée with this overnight French toast recipe. Rich, custardy bread is baked to golden perfection, creating a sumptuous breakfast treat that’s perfect for special occasions or leisurely weekend mornings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the French Toast:

  • 1 loaf French bread (about 12 ounces), sliced into 1-inch thick slices
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For Serving:

  • Powdered sugar and fresh berries, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir until smooth and bubbling.
  2. Pour the mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the sliced French bread in a single layer over the caramel mixture.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, and salt until well combined. Pour the custard evenly over the bread slices, pressing down slightly to absorb.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the dish from the refrigerator while the oven heats.
  6. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set.
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Top with powdered sugar and fresh berries, if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute brioche or challah for a richer flavor.
  • For added texture, sprinkle chopped pecans on top before baking.
