Scale
For the French Toast:
- 1 loaf French bread (about 12 ounces), sliced into 1-inch thick slices
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- 5 large eggs
- 1 ½ cups half-and-half
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
For Serving:
- Powdered sugar and fresh berries, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir until smooth and bubbling.
- Pour the mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the sliced French bread in a single layer over the caramel mixture.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, and salt until well combined. Pour the custard evenly over the bread slices, pressing down slightly to absorb.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the dish from the refrigerator while the oven heats.
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Top with powdered sugar and fresh berries, if desired.
Notes
- You can substitute brioche or challah for a richer flavor.
- For added texture, sprinkle chopped pecans on top before baking.
