Ingredients
Scale
Toast Base
- 4 slices of sourdough or French bread
Mushroom Mixture
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional for extra richness)
Cheeses and Garnish
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Sauté mushrooms: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with olive oil. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add sliced mushrooms, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are soft and golden brown.
- Add optional cream: Stir in the heavy cream and let the mixture simmer gently for 1-2 minutes to enhance richness. Remove the skillet from heat.
- Toast the bread: Arrange the bread slices on the prepared baking sheet and place them in the oven for about 5 minutes to lightly toast and develop a crispy base.
- Assemble toasts: Spoon the warm mushroom mixture evenly over each slice of toasted bread. Then generously sprinkle shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese on top.
- Bake to melt cheese: Return the assembled toasts to the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is bubbling beautifully.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the toasts from the oven and sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese, fresh chopped parsley, and red pepper flakes for a touch of heat if desired. Serve immediately while warm and melty.
Notes
- You can substitute the Gruyère cheese with mozzarella or fontina for a milder flavor.
- Use gluten-free bread to make this recipe gluten-free.
- For a vegan version, omit the cream and cheese, or use plant-based substitutes.
- The optional heavy cream adds extra richness but can be skipped for a lighter version.
- Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle spicy kick.
- For extra herbs, fresh thyme or rosemary can enhance the mushroom filling.
