Description
French Onion Croissant Burger combines the rich flavors of caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, and juicy beef patties sandwiched between buttery, flaky croissants for an indulgent gourmet burger experience.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
For the Onions
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
Other Ingredients
- 4 croissants, halved
- 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
- Baby arugula or lettuce (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 20 to 25 minutes until golden and caramelized. Stir in thyme leaves and balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes to deepen the flavors.
- Prepare Patties: While the onions cook, combine ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently and form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, taking care not to overwork the meat for tender results.
- Cook Patties: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3 to 4 minutes per side or until they reach the desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss or Gruyère cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese thoroughly.
- Toast Croissants: Lightly toast the croissant halves either in a skillet or under the broiler until they are warm and slightly crispy. For extra richness, brush the croissants with melted butter before toasting.
- Assemble Burgers: Spread mayonnaise on the bottom croissant half if using. Layer with baby arugula or lettuce, top with the cheesy beef patty, then add a generous portion of caramelized onions. Complete with the croissant top and serve immediately for optimal freshness and flavor.
Notes
- Handle croissants gently as they are delicate and flaky.
- Swiss cheese can be substituted with provolone or white cheddar for a different flavor profile.
- For a richer taste, brush croissant halves with melted butter before toasting.
