Description

These Chile Relleno Wontons combine crispy fried wonton wrappers with a spicy Monterey Jack cheese and chili filling, served with a vibrant jalapeño soy dipping sauce. Perfect as a flavorful appetizer or party snack, they offer a delightful fusion of Mexican-inspired flavors with an Asian twist.

Ingredients

Scale

Wontons

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 1 lb Monterey Jack cheese, cut into 1/2 to 1 1/2-inch strips
  • Green chilies and hot green chiles, cut into strips
  • Oil, for frying (about 2-3 cups, enough for deep frying)

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 minced jalapeño
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wontons: Lay out the wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Place one strip of Monterey Jack cheese and one strip of chili—green or hot depending on your spice preference—onto each wrapper.
  2. Seal the Wontons: Lightly moisten the edges of each wonton wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper over the filling and press the edges firmly together to seal completely, ensuring there are no gaps to prevent cheese leakage during frying. Let the sealed wontons rest for a few minutes.
  3. Fry the Wontons: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry each wonton for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  4. Make the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced jalapeño, honey, and sesame oil. Let the sauce sit for at least 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld and deepen.
  5. Serve: Serve the hot, crispy wontons with the jalapeño-soy dipping sauce. For additional flavor options, pair with queso, salsa, or ranch dressing as desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the wonton edges are fully sealed to prevent cheese from leaking during frying.
  • Adjust the chili type and amount according to your preferred spice level.
  • Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature at 350°F for evenly crispy wontons.
  • Let the dipping sauce rest to enhance the melding of flavors.
  • Leftover wontons can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in an air fryer or oven for best crispness.
