Description

A comforting and hearty Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast Casserole featuring flaky refrigerated biscuits layered with savory sausage gravy and eggs, baked to golden perfection. This dish combines the classic flavors of a Southern-style breakfast into an easy, make-ahead casserole perfect for family mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Biscuits

  • 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)

Egg Layer

  • 6 large eggs

Optional Toppings

  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Biscuits Base: Cut the biscuit dough into quarters and spread half evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating a base layer.
  3. Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  4. Make Sausage Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Gradually add the whole milk while stirring continuously until the gravy thickens. Season with black pepper to taste.
  5. Layer Gravy Over Biscuits: Pour and spread half of the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.
  6. Add Egg Layer: Whisk the eggs in a bowl until smooth and pour evenly over the gravy layer in the dish.
  7. Top with Remaining Biscuits and Gravy: Place the remaining biscuit quarters on top of the egg layer, then pour the remaining gravy over them. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top if desired.
  8. Bake: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and the eggs are set.
  9. Rest and Garnish: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes out of the oven. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving warm.

Notes

  • Use refrigerated biscuit dough for convenience and flaky texture.
  • For a spicier sausage gravy, consider using spicy breakfast sausage or adding cayenne pepper.
  • Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice richness and flavor contrast.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
  • Gluten-free biscuits and flour can be substituted to make the dish gluten-free.
