Ingredients
Scale
Biscuits
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
Sausage Gravy
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
Egg Layer
- 6 large eggs
Optional Toppings
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Biscuits Base: Cut the biscuit dough into quarters and spread half evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating a base layer.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
- Make Sausage Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Gradually add the whole milk while stirring continuously until the gravy thickens. Season with black pepper to taste.
- Layer Gravy Over Biscuits: Pour and spread half of the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.
- Add Egg Layer: Whisk the eggs in a bowl until smooth and pour evenly over the gravy layer in the dish.
- Top with Remaining Biscuits and Gravy: Place the remaining biscuit quarters on top of the egg layer, then pour the remaining gravy over them. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top if desired.
- Bake: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and the eggs are set.
- Rest and Garnish: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes out of the oven. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving warm.
Notes
- Use refrigerated biscuit dough for convenience and flaky texture.
- For a spicier sausage gravy, consider using spicy breakfast sausage or adding cayenne pepper.
- Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice richness and flavor contrast.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
- Gluten-free biscuits and flour can be substituted to make the dish gluten-free.
