Description
Authentic German Frikadellen are traditional pan-fried meat patties made with ground beef or a blend of beef and pork, combined with aromatics and herbs. These juicy, flavorful patties are perfect for a comforting meal and pair wonderfully with sides like mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, or a fresh salad.
Ingredients
Scale
Meat Mixture
- 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of ground beef and pork)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For Frying
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, thoroughly mix the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, dried thyme, dried parsley, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Form patties: Shape the meat mixture into patties approximately 1/2 inch thick. You should be able to make 6-8 patties depending on the size.
- Heat the oil: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil. Heat the oil until shimmering and hot.
- Cook patties: Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they develop a golden-brown crust and are cooked through. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.
- Drain excess oil: Remove the cooked Frikadellen from the skillet and transfer them onto a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Serve: Serve the Frikadellen hot alongside your choice of sides such as mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, or a fresh green salad.
Notes
- For juicier patties, you can use a mix of ground beef and pork.
- Adjust seasoning to your taste; adding a pinch of nutmeg can enhance the flavor.
- Ensure not to overcrowd the pan while frying to maintain the temperature and get a nice crust.
- Frikadellen can be reheated in a skillet or microwave and served with mustard or pickles for added zest.
