Ingredients
Scale
Fruit and Vegetables
- 1/2 cup apple, finely grated (seeds removed)
- 1/2 cup carrot, finely grated
Dry Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for gluten-free option)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for flavor)
Wet Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or unsweetened applesauce)
- 1/4 cup water (plus more if needed)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and cinnamon if you’re using it, ensuring they are well mixed for even flavor distribution.
- Add wet ingredients: Add the finely grated apple and carrot, egg, coconut oil (or applesauce), and water to the dry ingredients. Mix all components together until a dough forms. If the dough feels too dry, incorporate additional water one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
- Roll out the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it to about 1/4-inch thickness, preparing it for cutting.
- Cut the chew sticks: Cut the dough into long stick shapes or other fun shapes using a knife or cookie cutter, depending on your preference for your dog’s chew treats.
- Bake: Arrange the cuts on the lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the chew sticks are firm and lightly golden.
- Cool and serve: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and transfer the chew sticks to a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely before serving to your dog to ensure a safe and enjoyable treat.
Notes
- Use oat flour instead of whole wheat flour for a gluten-free version suitable for dogs with grain sensitivities.
- Cinnamon is optional but can add flavor; make sure your dog tolerates cinnamon before including it.
- Ensure all apple seeds are removed as they can be toxic to dogs.
- Store treats in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
- Adjust water quantity carefully to achieve the correct dough consistency – it should be firm enough to roll out but not sticky.
- Consult your veterinarian if your dog has dietary restrictions or allergies before introducing new treats.
