Description

This Amish Apple Fritter Bread is a delightful treat that combines the flavors of sweet apples, cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla in a moist, cake-like loaf. Topped with a simple glaze, this easy-to-make bread is perfect for breakfast or as a snack with a cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread:

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups peeled and chopped apples (such as Granny Smith)

Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk or cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon: In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon; set aside.
  3. Cream sugar and butter: In a large bowl, cream the granulated sugar and softened butter until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, mixing just until combined.
  5. Layer batter and apples: Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Layer half of the chopped apples over the batter, then sprinkle with half of the cinnamon-brown sugar mixture. Repeat with remaining batter, apples, and cinnamon mixture. Lightly press the top layer of apples into the batter.
  6. Bake: Bake for 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then remove to a wire rack.
  7. Make the glaze: Mix powdered sugar with milk to form a glaze and drizzle over the warm or cooled bread.

Notes

  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored wrapped at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for longer freshness.
  • Try using a mix of tart and sweet apples for more depth of flavor.
