Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard powder (optional)
Wet Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter (cubed)
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup whole milk (plus extra for brushing)
- 1 large egg (optional, for richer texture)
Instructions
- Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and mustard powder if using.
- Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the milk and egg (if using), then pour into the dry ingredients. Stir just until combined—do not overmix.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch thick round. Use a round cutter to cut out scones and place them on a parchment-lined air fryer tray or basket.
- Brush the tops lightly with milk. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Air fry in batches for 10–12 minutes or until the tops are golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the shredded cheese.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika or chopped fresh chives to the dough.
- These scones are best enjoyed warm with butter or alongside soup.
- You can substitute whole milk with buttermilk for a tangier flavor.
